How Acupuncture May Support Your Fertility Journey

Trying to conceive can be both physically and emotionally demanding. Whether you are trying naturally or undergoing fertility treatment such as IVF, it is understandable to look for additional ways to support your wellbeing during this time.

Acupuncture is increasingly used alongside conventional fertility care. Research has explored its possible effects on circulation, stress, hormonal regulation and the nervous system. However, acupuncture has not been proven to increase the chance of pregnancy or live birth, and it should be considered a complementary therapy rather than a replacement for appropriate medical fertility treatment.

1. Supporting Circulation

Some studies have investigated whether acupuncture may influence blood flow to the reproductive organs, including uterine circulation.

Healthy circulation is important for normal reproductive function. However, research has not yet established that acupuncture-related changes in blood flow translate into higher pregnancy or live-birth rates.

2. Hormonal and Menstrual Health

Researchers have also explored whether acupuncture may influence pathways involved in reproductive hormone regulation, including the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian (HPO) axis.

There is interest in its potential role alongside conventional care for menstrual irregularities and conditions such as PCOS. However, fertility problems and ovulatory disorders can have many different causes and should always be appropriately medically assessed.

3. Stress, Relaxation and Emotional Wellbeing

A fertility journey can bring significant emotional pressure, particularly during investigations or IVF treatment.

Many people find acupuncture sessions relaxing and value having dedicated time to slow down and focus on their wellbeing. Research continues into acupuncture's possible effects on the autonomic nervous system and stress responses.

While reducing stress can be valuable for overall wellbeing, acupuncture should not be presented as improving fertility simply by reducing stress.

4. Acupuncture Alongside IVF

Some people choose acupuncture before or during IVF as a complementary treatment.

Studies examining acupuncture around embryo transfer have produced mixed findings. Current evidence has not established that acupuncture improves live-birth rates following IVF.

For this reason, at Breeze Acupuncture we view acupuncture as supportive care during the IVF journey rather than as a treatment that guarantees or increases IVF success.

A Supportive, Individual Approach

At Breeze Acupuncture, fertility acupuncture is designed to complement — not replace — appropriate medical fertility care.

Treatment is tailored to the individual, with a focus on supporting general wellbeing, relaxation and comfort throughout what can be a demanding period.

If you are undergoing IVF or another fertility treatment, we encourage you to keep your fertility clinic or healthcare professional informed about any complementary therapies you are using.
